What to Pack

Packing for a holiday can be a tricky thing, especially when your New Zealand holiday is likely to be an extended one and possibly part of a bigger trip. The golden rule is not to take too much. You are likely to be touring which by definition means that you will be packing and unpacking fairly frequently.

So what do you need? The good news everything can be purchased here at a reasonable price so there is no need to panic. There are laundry facilities in most accommodations, whether a full service, wash and fold or guest laundry. Roundabout New Zealand clients will be sent a suggested packing list, customised to their trip, taking seasons and their chosen activities into account. We suggest that you take the following:

Phones, laptops & tablets
This depends on you and your need to stay connected. Wi-fi is fairly universally available. Cell phone reception surprisingly good. You won’t be out of touch (unless you want to be!). However, don’t be expecting much cell phone reception in the National Parks.

Chargers
If you are taking any of the above – make sure you have your charger!

Power Adapters
New Zealand’s electricity supply runs at 230/240 volts and our sockets look like this. Same as Australia. Make sure you have enough adapters (you can get them here) – it’s amazing how many electrical items we now travel with.

Cameras
New Zealand is a photographer’s dream. Bring some way of capturing it – your phone, go Pro, pocket digital camera or SLR – you are bound to want some memories.

Binoculars
If you are a wildlife enthusiast, a pair of lightweight binoculars are a real bonus, especially for the birdlife. Gannets at Cape Kidnappers, Albatross at Taiaroa Head, Penguins at Curio Bay, seals, dolphins, it will be great to zoom in on them while still keeping your distance and not disturbing them.

Raincoat
You will probably need one of these at some point in your trip! Doubles up as a windproof jacket as well. Waterproof trousers are also recommended if you are heading into the hills.

Normal clothes
Everything is pretty casual here, no need to go over board. Bring layers, and remember that there are many opportunities to buy merino! The temperatures can fluctuate a bit, so layers are best. Don’t forget your shorts

Footwear
Walking shoes, sandals, (and boots if you are heading off on a major tramp). Sand flies biting exposed skin esp feet and ankles can be a bit of a problem in some areas. There are plenty of insect repellents available, but covering up is best. We won’t laugh at your socks and sandals – or maybe just a little bit!

Biosecurity is rightly taken very seriously – on arrival in New Zealand you will need to declare hiking and sports equipment and show it to the Biosecurity Officers. Pack it at the top of your bag, so that you can get at it! And on that note, don’t bring food into New Zealand, if you do, declare it – it too is a biosecurity hazard.

Hats
Woolly, if here in the cooler months or heading into the hills and a sun hat year round. The sun can be very intense.

Togs & Towel
Plenty of opportunity to swim – sea, rivers (hot and cold), lakes but also if you are doing a trip such as swimming with dolphins or rafting.

Torch
Always handy, esp if you go out at night in search of glow worms

Insect repellent, sunscreen
Essential, but probably better bought on arrival

Glasses prescription / Medicine Prescription
Should they break or you run out, it does make things easier.

Check your visa requirements and don’t forget your travel insurance.

What to pack it in
You are more than likely to be touring, and probable that you will have some internal flights or a ferry crossing between the North and South Islands – make sure your bag is easy to carry.
A small back pack is also handy for day trips.

And what to take home………

Souvenirs, gifts or just something you happen to like. As you travel around you will come across all sorts of things of appeal – look out for markets, gift shops & galleries, especially in the smaller towns. Merino, greenstone, art, pottery, woodcrafts. Larger items can be shipped – especially your wine!
