The best time to visit New Zealand (anytime is the real answer!)

This is really up to you – it depends on the time you have available! We have something to offer at all times throughout the year. Clearly if you want to ski, you need to come in winter and if swimming is high on your list then you will need to hit the summer months. However, the rest of the time is a good time to do just about anything – yes of course a few of the walks are closed in winter and yes, January is busier with Kiwis on holiday as schools are out and many businesses close for a couple of weeks over Christmas and New Year – but with a bit of forward planning this should not be a barrier to your trip.

As for the weather – mild temperatures, moderately high rainfall and many many hours of sunshine. We are an island (or three) in the Southern Hemisphere – so summer is Dec – Feb , winter May – August but our island status and most places so close to the coast means “Four Seasons in One Day” is not unusual. Remember, we have stunningly beautiful rain forests – it rains – the locals will remind you of this – bring a raincoat! We also grow grapes and make some of the best wine in the world – we have a lot of sun – bring a hat and use sunscreen. The weather can change unexpectedly so be prepared and come with an open mind. But hey, our outdoor apparel shops are prolific and we have some great brands, and lovely merino, so a little diversion into one of these is probably on your horizon anyway!

Our favourite time of year is February to May – we love these months, still warm, often a little more settled and just a little less busy and some of the displays of autumn colours are fabulous.

You will not be disappointed, whatever time of year you choose to come – we will make sure of that!
